On HotF, we generally use canon prefixes and suffixes, with some modifications.
With the exception of anything listed otherwise on this thread, non-canon prefixes and suffixes will never be accepted.
There are a variety of canon name pieces that are not allowed. They will be listed for your convenience. If you are not sure whether or not a prefix or suffix is canon, check the Character list that this guide is based off of.
Many prefixes can be reversed and used as suffixes. For example, if your character is collected and sturdy, the prefix Oak might make a fine suffix for them.
Some things to remember about naming:
1. Characters cannot be named for their eye color. Kits are generally named within a few days of birth (at most). Kittens don't open their eyes for a few weeks, and their eyes don't change from blue-gray for several more weeks after that.
2. Characters cannot be named after their parents' wishes/hopes/fears for them--otherwise, every kit would be Happykit and Lovekit.
3. Prefixes are specifically related to appearance. Suffixes can be given for skill, personality, or, if nothing else stands out, appearance. It's okay to use -fur and -pelt. Average characters are good.
4. Take your character's Clan into consideration. You probably wouldn't find a WindClan apprentice named Troutpaw, nor would you see many RiverClan kits called Rabbitkit.
SkyClan kittypet names are not accepted here. Examples include: Ebony-, Harry-, Bella-, Billy-, and Harvey-.
Verb prefixes are not accepted here. Examples include Running-, Fidget-, Bounce-, and Sneeze-.
Clan names are not accepted here. Examples include Thunder- and River-. The exception to this rule is Sky-, as SkyClan is not roleplayed here.
Prefixes that are only half of a full word or only make sense with a few specific suffixes: Mistle-, Arch-, Cone-.
Prefixes that indicate personality, such as Shy-.
There are a variety of non-canon prefixes and suffixes that we do accept:
Bat-
Bear-
Boar-
Brook-
Elk-
Elm-
Lynx-
Mink-
Stream-
-leap, used by an Ancient known as Fish Leap, works for a cat who has an impressive skill in jumping
-fin, Milkfur of RiverClan's original name in Yellowfang's Secret, works well for a cat who is outstanding in the water
A full canon name can be used as long as the character wasn't a main character. While this is subjective, if this character was only mentioned a few times throughout the book, it's safe to say that they were not important enough for their name to be barred. The names Fireheart, Graystripe, Crowfeather, and Flametail all come to mind as names that people typically remember as characters from the books. On the other hand, Willowpelt, Scorchfur, and Smoketalon weren't exactly the most prominent cats, so it's fine to use those names.
Sun- and Moon- are allowed here; while the Erins have said that these prefixes were mistakes, they have used Sun-/Sunny- over five times now, so these prefixes can't be that sacred.
If your character is a loner, rogue, or kittypet, any name goes.
Outsiders who are accepted into a Clan will have their name changed to an appropriate Clan name. The leader will choose this name, though the player of the outsider is free to make requests.
