Private for: Oakley and sorry it's so short! Sprawled out on the ground of the clearing, Dawncloud was soaking up the warmth of the afternoon green-leaf sun. Her grey pelt was still damp from the earlier dip she had during a loosely organized border patrol. The cats of RiverClan had no deputy, nor a leader at all for that matter, so patrols were messy and some only ended up with just having one cat going. RiverClan is pathetic the way it is now, and she hoped that the other clans were doing worse so that her clan wasn't so low as she thought compared. Dawncloud should've been doing what she was doing now on Sunningrocks, however, there weren't many cats that hung there now. Not anymore at least, here, there were warriors still conversing each other. (And also because there was always the risk where ThunderClan could resume their little squables.)

Any length is fine by me.
In the past few weeks, the sun worked hard at melting the ice from the river. Its success led to plentiful prey for RiverClan, and they were steadily growing plumper than their rivals. They won't catch up for moons, Brookpaw thought, a massive fish hanging from her mouth. She glanced across the river to see a familiar pelt at Sunningrocks. Ears flicking, Brookpaw dove into the water, holding her catch as though losing it would result in her execution. She moved through the water with impressive ease. She pulled herself out of the water on the ThunderClan side of the river, her pelt dripping water, and shook herself off.
Normally at this time, I'd probably be patrolling the borders, Brookpaw thought, trotting toward her mother. Without anyone in leadership positions, there was no one to officially organize patrols. Warriors still ordered patrols, but Brookpaw could worm out of them with few issues. Cats came and went, doing their duties to the best of their abilities. Brookpaw took advantage of this easygoing, albeit tired, way of life by spending entire days fishing (with, of course, the "occasional" swimming break). She enjoyed the balance of freedom and community in RiverClan's current state.
Brookpaw leaped atop the rock her mother sunbathed on and placed the massive fish down in front of her. The young tabby puffed out her chest and said, "Dawncloud, I caught this for you. It's one of the biggest fish I've ever gotten. What do you think?"

Dawncloud purred in delight as the sun hit just right on the correct spots on her chest and sides, the rock below her also kept her back warm. Overall, it was nice being there. Her golden eyes began to disappear as her lids began to slide over them to doze off.
Until... splat!
Her eyes flew open and her long thick and fluffy tail flicked angrily. Water splashed by her her ear, causing her to flinch and the scent of fish reached her nostrils. Did a fish really just decided it wanted a sunbath too? A familiar mew sounded and she figured it something a lot more common, Brookpaw coming to try and earn her approval again. Something she could never have. A small sigh escaped the warrior's maw as she heaved herself up to sit in front of her daughter, tail neatly over her paws and the prey laying between them. "Hm?" She purred with irritation. Her eyes scanned the rather large fish lazily before looking back to Brookpaw with an unamused expression. Fortunately, this fish in particular was one of her least favorite type of fish to snack on. "If this is a gift, I don't accept." Dawncloud's paw rested on its scales, claws digging. "The meat is too dry, I'll choke as soon as I a take a bite!"

Brookpaw's head tilted back, her eyes practically glowing as her mother sat up and acknowledged her. Excitement bubbled in her belly: Dawncloud finally recognized her skill in hunting. She'd devour the fish in under a minute and praise Brookpaw to StarClan and...
She hated this type of fish and didn't want anything to do with Brookpaw's gift. The young molly deflated, her heart sinking into her belly and her expression wilting like a flower in leaf-fall.
Brookpaw's tail lashed and she cleared her throat, then said, "It wasn't a gift. I just wanted to show you a small piece of what I'm capable of. This is my lunch. I brought five other fish back to camp for the fresh-kill pile this morning. I thought I deserved some lunch, so I'm going to eat this and then return to hunting."
When it came to games, Brookpaw wasn't a dishonorable competitor nor a sore loser, but as far as achievements went, she saw nothing wrong with exaggerating here and there. It wasn't a lie if she estimated, right?
Brookpaw crouched and ripped a piece of meat from the fish, chomping the food and smacking her tongue around in her mouth. "You're really missing out here, Mother."
"Would you like to go fishing with me when I'm done with my meal? Doesn't look like you're doing anything else, and you might as well contribute to the Clan as much as the rest of us," she said. Her gaze narrowed. Would the jab hit? Irritation flared up inside Brookpaw, her petty streak rearing its ugly head once again. Dawncloud hurt her and now she'd get under her mother's skin just the same.

Dawncloud watched the molly's posture of hope deflate and become somewhat shattered by her response. The large grey she-cat half expected her to be brought to tears by Dawn's rejection, but instead, the opposite happened. She unhooked her claws from the catch's scales as Brookpaw pulled it from her grasp and wolfed it down herself. Dawncloud wrinkled her nose as Brookpaw intentionally mocked her with her eating. "I doubt it." She remarked.
The next thing she said bothered Dawncloud, very much in fact. She lashed her tail and flattened her ears as her eyes narrowed when she stuck her head up with a straight posture. Her yellow eyes glared daggers as she was about to hiss, before a splendid idea fell into her brain. She relaxed and gave a soft sigh, a forced acted sigh. "I don't see why not?" A smile curled on her maw. "How about we go up stream?" Dawncloud had no intentions in actually spending mother/daughter time with Brook, she shot a pebble at her own mother, now Brook could learn that she could launch boulders back.

Brookpaw watched her mother's every move, a dark satisfaction filling her in more ways than praise ever could. Disturbed and sickened by the thought, Brookpaw sniffed, hoping to snuff it out. No luck there: Dawncloud's reaction pleased Brookpaw to no end. Stiffened posture, fierce narrowed eyes... maybe Brookpaw needed to change her methods.
More shocking than Dawncloud's brief anger was her concession. Brookpaw flinched: Dawncloud spending time with her? What a day.
Don't forget, she told herself. If she impressed Dawncloud with her boldness, it certainly wouldn't last long. Brookpaw's motivation to further piss off her mother faded away as she leaped down and headed up stream. Dread and excitement fought a war inside her, and she felt like vomiting.
